MARINE ANIMALS

What to do.....

PENGUINS at Stoney Point, Betty’s Bay

If in the Betty’s Bay area I recommend a visit to Stony Point African Penguin Colony.

Today the Point is one of only three land based colonies for the African penguin. The walkway and platform make for easy viewing, and there are usually eggs and chicks to see too. The noise and numbers amaze, and I can get lost there for hours watching them march around, catch the waves, and play in the surf. Good to know they are safe here.

SOUTHERN RIGHT WHALES

are about the size of a bus. These marine mammals each weigh up to 80 tonnes and may reach 18 metres long. Although southern right whales are huge, bulky creatures, they are also agile and active animals, and their acrobatic antics can keep whale watchers amazed and entranced for hours.

BOTTLE NOSE DOLPHINS

are mammals.

Bottlenose dolphins nurse their calves with milk from mammary glands of the mothers.

Bottlenose Dolphins can swim up to 260 m. below the surface of the ocean.
However they need quick access to air in the surface, therefore bottlenose dolphins usually are shallow divers and close to the surface.

GREAT WHITE SHARKS

The legendary great white shark is far more fearsome in our imaginations than in reality

Great whites are the largest predatory fish on Earth. They grow to an average of 15 feet (4.6 meters) in length, though specimens exceeding 20 feet (6 meters) and weighing up to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kilograms) have been recorded.
